As I attempt to display what inspires me as an artist I become frustrated. I begin to question myself and the pieces I have created in my past, how do you validate yourself as an artist if you can’t respond to these important questions concicesly and quickly? I had to dig deep and move away from my typical explosive thought process when creating for this piece. It was an important lesson that gave me great clarity.

The background has a double meaning, it’s a torn paper representing how there’s always going to be a tear in your plan, in your backbone. However, the tear will only go as deep as you let it, hence the small offset. The shape of the tear also represents an inlet which reminds me of the sea, the power of the sea specifically.

The ear represents how others inspire me, I beleive one of my biggest inspirations in art is conversation, therefore I listen to everyone thoughtfully, everyone has something important to add to your life.

The rectangle represents uniformity and order which has always appealed to me, it makes me feel secure when there are rules to follow.

The degrading set of ellipses represents how I must climb out of order into a state of abstract fluid thinking. The degradation represents randomness in my thought as a rational process begins to slip away.

The tag represents horseshoe bay, where I grew up.
